THE CLOSE MANSION — 1874

This image represents the Close Mansion when it was built in 1874. Therefore it appears with no landscaping or other buildings.  Oil on panel 12 by 12 inches. Cedar County Highway X40

I saw this scene while on a bike ride northeast of West Branch on an evening in late May.  I was struck by how the sun warmed the clouds and fields. Oil on canvas 9 by 12 inches.

I did this painting during a workshop in Ulysses, Kansas taught by Kim Casebeer, one of my favorite landscape painters. Oil on canvas 8 by 10 inches.

RED ROOF ON JORDANS GROVE ROAD II

This larger version of Red Roof on Jordans Grove Road received a blue ribbon at Iowa Artist Region 8 Show, and Best of Show at Iowa Artist Statewide Show, April 2024. Oil on canvas 16 by 20 inches.

Foursquare II

This is a larger version of Foursquare that I had painted in January 2022, which was 12 by 12 inches. This larger painting is oil on canvas, 20 by 20 inches. Received blue ribbon at Iowa Artist Region 8 Show, April 2023 and Red Ribbon at Iowa Artist Statewide Show, May 2023.


HOUSE WITH black roof


I did this in 1982 when I left art school. Oil on canvas, 12 by 9 inches.  I  would not paint again until 2022 when I painted Foursquare shown below.  


FourSquare

This small painting of a foursquare style house was my fist painting in 40 years. Oil on canvas, 12 by 12 inches. 


Helen's House

When I was sixteen I painted a picture of my sister Helen's house. She died in January 2022.  Remembering that early painting inspired me to paint again. This is the second painting that I did when I set up my studio in February 2022. Oil on canvas, 12 by 16 inches.


Allamakee County

This scene is a country lane near Effigy Mounds National Monument in Allamakee County, Iowa. Oil on canvas, 12 by 16 inches.

This image of the Mayo Clinic Plummer Building in Rochester, Minnesota, was done in oil on canvas, 10 by 10 inches. I also painted a version in acrylic.

Fields after a rain storm. Oil on canvas, 8 by 10 inches. This is a small study of the view from the backyard of my boyhood home in Clare, Iowa.

This is my second version of the same scene inspired by a thunderstorm that passed through Clare on a July day just before sunset. The white speck on the horizon represents the grain mill in the neighboring town of Barnum. As the sun broke through the clouds its rays were reflected off the structure. Oil on canvas 8 by 10 inches.

Sugar Bottom Road is on one of my regular bike ride routes. Oil on canvas, 11 by 14 inches. 


Elon Road


On the last day of RAGBRAI (a week long bike ride across the state of Iowa) I took a photo of the view from Elon Drive. This is my painting of that view. Oil on canvas, 8 by 10 inches.

 This landscape is based on a scene that I saw while riding my bike on RAGBRAI in July 2022. Oil 10 by 20 inches. Selected for inclusion in Land/Scape: Climate Change, the Environment, and Beyond at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, February to May 2024.

I saw this cloud in an early evening late in May while on a bicycle ride north of West Branch, Iowa. Oil on canvas 8 by 10 inches.
